Parliamentary Committee on Women and Children Affairs Meets with NIHR

The Council of Representatives’ Parliamentary Committee on Women and Children Affairs, under the chairpersonship of Head of Committee Mrs. Rouaa Al-Hayki, Representative at the Council, held a meeting with the NIHR’s Acting Secretary General Mr. Yasser Shaheen, on the Draft Law to modify some of the provisions of Law No. 37 of 2012 on issuance of the Child Law.  During the meeting, the Committee reviewed and discussed NIHR’s opinions on the Draft Law section related to NIHR’s accession to the National Childhood Committee.  The NIHR endorsed its accession to the National Childhood Committee membership with some reservations.  Furthermore, the NIHR’s opinions asserted the importance of being engaged in national committees concerned with any human rights-related matters.

Mrs. Al-Hayki stated that the NIHR showed its initial approval to join the National Childhood Committee, indicating that its membership in such committees generates joint action with governmental bodies and specialized institutions of the civil society, the matter which will actively help to foster and protect the human rights of child category in particular within the State system.

On the other side, the NIHR’s opinions asserted that such membership should not contradict with its terms of reference assigned to it by virtue of its Establishment Law as well as the Paris Principles that are considered its legal reference of work.

The Meeting was attended by Council’s Vice Chairman Mr. Ali Al-Muqla, Committee Member Mr. Anas Bohend and NIHR’s Head of National Legislations Unit of Mr. Mohamed Al-Najar.
